Guide to Use Rough Cut Capacity Planning Calculator

  • Enter the planned production for each of four periods (weeks or months), in units, from your master production schedule.
  • Enter the available capacity of your key resource in hours for each period. Use demonstrated capacity, what the resource has actually produced recently, where you have it.
  • Enter the standard hours per unit that the product needs at that resource (its bill of labor).
  • Click “Calculate” to see the required hours, the load ratio and the spare or short hours for each period.
  • Use the “Reset” button to clear all fields and start fresh.

Formula Used for the Calculator

Required capacity (hours) = planned units × standard hours per unit

Load ratio = required capacity ÷ available capacity

Spare hours = available capacity − required capacity (a negative result means the period is overloaded)

What is the Rough Cut Capacity Planning Calculator?

This calculator runs the bill-of-labor form of rough-cut capacity planning for one product, or one product family, at one key resource over four periods. It answers a single question: can the bottleneck carry the master schedule? For general capacity sizing, use the Capacity Planning Calculator.

Example. A plant plans 300, 350, 400 and 320 units over four weeks. Each unit needs 0.5 hours at the assembly cell, which has 160 hours a week. Required capacity is 150, 175, 200 and 160 hours, so the load is 94%, 109%, 125% and 100%: 10 hours spare in week 1, 15 and 40 hours short in weeks 2 and 3, and no slack in week 4.

For several products, several key resources or work that happens a week or more before the due date, use the free three-method worksheet in our rough-cut capacity planning guide, which also compares CPOF, bill of labor and resource profile on one schedule.

What is Rough Cut Capacity Planning?

Rough cut capacity planning checks whether the master production schedule is achievable at the key resources before it is released to MRP. ASCM places it at the tactical level, next to master scheduling, typically in weekly buckets over about three months.

It converts the planned units into hours at each bottleneck and compares those hours with the capacity available in each period. An overload shows up early, while overtime, a shift or a change to the schedule is still possible.

This method provides a broad overview of capacity requirements, allowing companies to make informed decisions about resource allocation and production scheduling.

Who Can Use This Calculator?

The Rough Cut Capacity Planning Calculator is beneficial for professionals involved in production and supply chain management.

This includes production managers, planners, and individuals responsible for optimizing manufacturing processes and ensuring efficient resource utilization.

Which Industries Can Use This Calculator?

Industries involved in manufacturing, production, and supply chain management can benefit from the Rough Cut Capacity Planning Calculator. This includes but is not limited to sectors such as automotive, electronics, consumer goods, and any industry where managing production capacity is crucial for operational success.

Benefits of Using This Calculator

  • Improved Efficiency: Helps in optimizing resource allocation, leading to improved operational efficiency.
  • Better Planning: Enables businesses to plan production schedules based on estimated capacity requirements.
  • Enhanced Decision-Making: Provides insights for informed decision-making in resource management.
  • Early Warning: Shows an overloaded period before the schedule is released, while a fix is still cheap. RCCP checks a plan; it does not forecast demand.

Where is This Method Useful?

The Rough Cut Capacity Planning method is particularly useful in scenarios where businesses need a quick, preliminary assessment of their production capacity.

It’s beneficial in industries with fluctuating demand or those aiming for agile and responsive production planning.

FAQs

How frequently should I use the Rough Cut Capacity Planning Calculator?

It’s advisable to use the calculator periodically, especially when there are changes in demand patterns or production capabilities.

Can this calculator handle complex production scenarios?

While it provides a broad overview, for intricate production processes, a more detailed capacity planning tool may be necessary.
